Choosing a Japan eSIM
For a Japan-only trip, compare a country plan with your expected data use. A regional plan is worth comparing when your route also includes another country.
Provider page checked 7 October 2026. Prices and availability can change.
A concrete 7-day example
Ubigi lists a Japan plan with 10 GB for 7 days at US$14. Its product page says data sharing is allowed and that unused eSIMs can be reused for plans in other destinations. Check the live checkout for currency, taxes, availability and exact plan terms.
How much data should you plan for?
There is no universal daily allowance. Maps and messaging use less data than video calls, cloud backups and streaming. Estimate from your usual phone settings, turn off automatic photo backups on mobile data if needed, and choose a plan with a top-up path if you prefer a smaller initial allowance.
If your itinerary crosses borders
Compare the total price and included data of one regional plan with separate country plans. Verify every destination is covered, the plan lasts for all travel days, and activation timing matches your first arrival. Do not assume a provider’s “Asia” or “regional” product covers every stop.
Before installing
- Confirm the device model is eSIM-compatible and unlocked.
- Install using a stable Wi-Fi connection and follow the provider’s steps.
- Set the travel eSIM as the mobile-data line after landing; keep your regular number available only if you need it and understand its roaming costs.
- Check whether a local voice number is included if you need calls or SMS beyond internet messaging apps.
